September’s Breakfast for a Cause, “Living with Osteoarthritis,” was sponsored by Osceola Regional Medical Center. Breakfast for a Cause gives attendees a chance to learn from the experts about specific health concerns and pose questions directly to doctors and specialists. On this outing, Dr. Nicole Brenner explained osteoarthritis, types of osteoarthritis, risk factors, prevention tips, impacts of osteoarthritis on daily life, and how to treat osteoarthritis with exercise, supplements, and weight management.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, characterized by a breakdown of cartilage.
Osteoarthritis typically affects joints that receive the most “wear and tear.”
Risk factors for osteoarthritis include aging, gender (more common in women), genes, joint abnormality, obesity, and joint damage.
There is no way to stop the damage of osteoarthritis, but weight loss and exercise can improve function and prevent pain. Physical therapy can also help to increase flexibility and strengthen the muscles around your joints. Hot or cold packs (as preferred) and supportive devices like finger splints, knee braces, canes, or crutches, can also help. Exercises such as stretching, strengthening, or aerobic exercises can help, but it is recommended to always speak with a doctor before beginning an exercise program.
The September Breakfast for a Cause was catered by Big John’s Rockin’ BBQ. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, be sure to join us at the Osceola County Council on Aging for the next Breakfast for a Cause, “Pink Ribbon Breakfast” sponsored by AdventHealth, on October 24th. The Chamber will be raffling off a basket of goodies with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Raffle tickets may be purchased ahead of time on the event page or at the breakfast.
